Ashley in the gray sweat shirt, Keeton in black sweat shirt.
I'm so excited to announce Keeton and Ashley as our volunteers of the month for April! If you can't just tell from their picture they have fun and unique personalities. One of my favorite things about these volunteers is they are always looking to make new people feel welcomed in the program and they are ALWAYS excited about the activities we plan. Also, from day one they also had their eyes set on being senior volunteers! Which they worked very hard to achieve, coming in twice a week for a total of 6 hours a week, and they started in January working up to their 40 hours! These girls are hardworkers, and just the kind of volunteers that Mercy needs!

Message From a Special Volunteer

2:30 PM Posted In Edit This 1 Comment »

Brittany D. had written something special that she wanted to share about her experience volunteering at Mercy and how it has benefited her. Thank you brittany for sharing this with us.

I was first motivated to begin volunteering at my local hospital in hopes of learning more about physical therapy and also to get a general understanding of the healthcare system. I am interested in the health care field because I want the best for others and want to help them. When I arrive at the hospital, I check in with many of the departments such as birthing, ICU, and admitting to see if I can be of any assistance. I perform a variety of tasks such as, delivering confidential papers, returning wheelchairs and carts, putting surgical and patient packets together, or just making the patients comfortable. My favorite duty is delivering dinner trays. With a friendly greeting and a warm smile, I enter their room after a small knock. I take an interest in each patient by asking them how their day has been going or about their family. I then clear their bedside table to make way for their supper tray. After I have assisted with their meal, I make sure I have done everything possible to make them comfortable. I have experienced a lot of personal growth during my volunteer experience. I feel the self satisfaction that helping others brings. I have learned new social skills by working with adults and the elderly, appropriate hand washing technique, and emergency protocol. The most memorable experience I had was with an elderly lady who was so frustrated to be in the hospital. I could tell she was lonely so I sat with her while she ate dinner and we talked. In that hour, I learned so much about her. I would recommend volunteering at the hospital to anyone because it is a special experience you will never forget.

I stumbled upon a website with poems that praised volunteering, and I wanted to share one of my favorites, it was found on the teacher.nets site, these poems were compiled by Vikki. I found that it seemed to say everything that I would want to tell our volunteers! :) Below is also listed the link in case you wanted to see what other things people write about volunteers.

Volunteers

Where would we be without volunteers
Who quickly respond when a need appears?

This is the way you have chosen to serve~
What appreciation you deserve!

There are very many things to do
And YOUR time can only be given by YOU!

So without complaint and without demands
You offer the labor of your hands.

The world is a better place to live
When people like you are so willing to give.

With this attitude of love and of care
You will find a welcome anywhere.

You may not always know when someone
Is especially blessed by a kindness you've done:

As you freely share your hours and days,
May you also be blessed in many ways.

Interesting Fact!!

2:22 PM Posted In Edit This 0 Comments »
The muscle you see here is called the "Sartorius", and did you know that it is the longest muscle in the human body? The sartorius muscle assists in flexion of the knee, abduction and lateral rotation of hip, and flexion and medial rotation of knee. If you went to check out the bottom of your foot like you stepped in some funky gunk you would demonstrate all 5 actions of this muscle. Pretty neat fact huh?

I also wanted to share this link with you that talked about the health benefits of volunteering!
Hope some of you have gotten a chance to check out our new blog! I hope some of you found these facts interesting! :) Please contact me if you would like to write something special up for the new roseburg mercy volunteers blog!

Welcome!

Welcome Volunteers! We really appreciate the time and effort you guys put into volunteering at Mercy Medical Center. We wanted to start a blog site, to further show our appreciation and show the community what our amazing volunteers do. This will be an area where we can post new events, pictures, and share our ideas! We can also post interesting facts or stories that we feel are relevant to our program! To start our blog off, I wanted to do a recognition for the Youth Volunteers every month, it was so hard deciding because I think ALL the volunteers are amazing. So this month I actually chose two volunteers that I felt had gone above and beyond their everyday volunteer duties, Shayla M. and Brittany D.!

Shayla and Brittany, have been a great help with introducing our new volunteers to the program over the summer. They always arrive on the job eager to help staff with a very cheerful disposition. They also take extra time outside of their volunteer work to come in and help with the advancement of the Youth Volunteer program at Mercy. They were recently promoted to being Senior Youth Volunteers, which allows them to take a leadership role in the program. We really appreciate their time and dedication to the program, and we know the staff appreciates their help! So Thank you Brittany and Shayla and congratulations on being volunteers of the month for October!!

Sincerely,

Rose
