Message From a Special Volunteer

Brittany D. had written something special that she wanted to share about her experience volunteering at Mercy and how it has benefited her. Thank you brittany for sharing this with us.

I was first motivated to begin volunteering at my local hospital in hopes of learning more about physical therapy and also to get a general understanding of the healthcare system. I am interested in the health care field because I want the best for others and want to help them. When I arrive at the hospital, I check in with many of the departments such as birthing, ICU, and admitting to see if I can be of any assistance. I perform a variety of tasks such as, delivering confidential papers, returning wheelchairs and carts, putting surgical and patient packets together, or just making the patients comfortable. My favorite duty is delivering dinner trays. With a friendly greeting and a warm smile, I enter their room after a small knock. I take an interest in each patient by asking them how their day has been going or about their family. I then clear their bedside table to make way for their supper tray. After I have assisted with their meal, I make sure I have done everything possible to make them comfortable. I have experienced a lot of personal growth during my volunteer experience. I feel the self satisfaction that helping others brings. I have learned new social skills by working with adults and the elderly, appropriate hand washing technique, and emergency protocol. The most memorable experience I had was with an elderly lady who was so frustrated to be in the hospital. I could tell she was lonely so I sat with her while she ate dinner and we talked. In that hour, I learned so much about her. I would recommend volunteering at the hospital to anyone because it is a special experience you will never forget.

If you could have one super power, what would it be and why?: I'd pick the super power of flight because I think it would be the most fun and useful.

If you could be any animal what would you be and why?: Some kind of bird, like an eagle, so I can soar freely over everything.

Serious Questions:

Why did you decide to volunteer?: I heard about it in Mr. Duffy's class and I thought that it was a good opportunity. People really appreciate volunteers. Plus, it looks really good on a resume.

What is your favorite part of being a volunteer at Mercy?: My favorite part is being a part of something bigger. I have never known that much about the hospitals, so this is a fun way to get to know it. Also, people are always very grateful for your help.

Why do you think other people should volunteer?: It is a good way to spend some extra time. Instead of sitting at home, a person can be of some use at the hospital.
